In an era of T20 cricket, where teams are trading caution for aggression, Abhishek Sharma has imbibed the change and is leading India's charge at the top of the order.
Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Abhishek initially made headlines by stealing the show in the Vijay Merchant U-16 tournament in the 2015-16 season. In 12 innings across seven games, he amassed 1200 runs - the only player to breach the 1000-run mark, averaging a whopping 109.09, including six hundreds and three fifties.

His best outing was an unbeaten 226, which he scored at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium in Patiala on December 6, and helped Punjab rout Jammu & Kashmir by an innings and 351 runs.
While Abhishek was as consistent as a batter could be throughout the course of the tournament, what stood out was his ability to grind the opponents into the dirt with his clean ball-striking. In a red-ball tournament like the Vijay Merchant Trophy, batters often take the sedate approach and prioritise run-scoring over strike rate; however, contrary to the accepted norm, Abhishek racked up his runs at 111.94.
He finished the tournament as the leading run-getter and only the second player with a strike rate of over 100, the other being his teammate Prabhsimran Singh (108.06).
Abhishek's blitzkrieg in the Vijay Merchant Trophy prompted selectors to name him as captain of India's U19 team for the ACC U-19s Asia Cup in 2016. India beat Sri Lanka in the final by 34 runs, and Abhishek was adjudged the Player of the Match (POTM) for scoring 29 and bagging a four-for (4/37).
Abhishek was also a part of India's U19 World Cup-winning squad in 2018. While he didn't really make a splash at the showpiece event, his fifty and bowling figures of 2/11 in five overs were crucial in helping India sink Bangladesh in the quarterfinals.
Graduating from age-group cricket, Abhishek got the first taste of high-octane pressure at the senior level when Delhi Daredevils picked him at the IPL 2018 auction for Rs 55 lakh. The southpaw made a statement of intent on his IPL debut when he smashed 46 off just 19 balls against RCB at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 12, 2018. However, he only got two more opportunities in the season before Delhi traded him and two others to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the next season in exchange for Shikhar Dhawan.
After three fairly modest seasons with SRH while batting in the middle and the lower middle order, Abhishek teed off in the 2022 edition when the franchise entrusted him with the responsibility to open the innings.
He accumulated 426 runs at a strike rate of 133.12 while maintaining a healthy average of 30.42, scoring two half-centuries. Abhishek's best came during the 2024 season when he, alongside Travis Head, raided bowling attacks for fun and forced them to duck for cover.
Abhishek's purple patch in 2024 saw him aggregate 484 runs at 32.26 at a blistering strike rate of 204.21 - the highest among players with more than 400 runs in the season. Abhishek's intrepid approach helped Sunrisers cruise to the finals, where they suffered a loss to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Abhishek's scintillating season earned him an India call-up when the selectors picked the team for a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe, following a historic T20 World Cup campaign in the USA and the Caribbean.
After the disappointment of a duck on debut in Harare, Abhishek came out flying and scored a century in his second game, laced with seven fours and eight sixes, and was awarded the Player of the Match.
Abhishek has brought his adventurous game to India colours and reaped the benefits. He recorded his second ton in the format against a quality team like England at Wankhede on February 2, 2025. Notably, he is one of only six India players who have scored two or more centuries in the shortest format of the game. Additionally, Abhishek wields the highest career strike rate (189.51) in T20 internationals among players who have faced a minimum of 250 deliveries.

His Player of the Tournament effort in the 2025 Men's Asia Cup helped India clinch their record-ninth title and earn the bragging rights as the most dominant side on the continent. Having ticked the T20 format off his bucket list, Abhishek would now be eager to leave an impression in the other white-ball format as Team India stare at transition.
