The formation of the Afghanistan Cricket Federation (now Afghanistan Cricket Board) in 1995 laid the foundation of cricket in the country. The ACB was elected as an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2008 and earned Associate membership in 2014. Afghanistan secured Full Member status at the ICC's Annual General Meeting in London, England, on June 22, 2017.
Afghanistan made their Test debut in June, 2018, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru against the mighty Indians. The result, expectedly, went India's way as they won by an innings and 262 runs.
India were dominant right from the get-go as their openers Murali Vijay (105) and Shikhar Dhawan (107) brought up their respective hundreds and added 168 runs for the opening wicket. KL Rahul (54) and Hardik Pandya (71) registered half-centuries and powered India to a mammoth 474.
Afghanistan, in reply, got bowled out for just 109 in 27.5 overs with Ravichandran Ashwin claiming a four-fer. They could only manage 103 in their second innings after being asked to follow-on by India captain Ajinkya Rahane as Ravindra Jadeja led the demolition job with a four-wicket haul.
Afghanistan outside the WTC
Afghanistan are not yet among the top nine Test‑playing nations and therefore remain outside the ongoing ICC Men’s World Test Championship. Their Test record reflects a side still finding its feet:
-
Matches played: 14
-
Wins: 4 (two against Zimbabwe, one each against Bangladesh and Ireland)
-
Losses: 8
-
Draws: 2
