Pakistan's emerging all-rounder Arafat Minhas delivered a sensational performance in the second match of the ongoing tri-series against England, steering his side to a convincing 87-run victory.
Minhas walked in to bat with Pakistan in a precarious position, having lost half their side for 133/5 in 27.3 overs. The left-hander led the recovery alongside Hassan Nawaz and brought up his maiden ODI half-century.
Despite England being in control for large parts of the innings, Minhas remained composed and rotated the strike intelligently. He also capitalised on anything loose, striking nine boundaries during his knock. Nawaz and Minhas added a crucial 78 runs for the sixth wicket before Nawaz was bowled by Jamie Overton.
Minhas continued to anchor the innings and forged another valuable 72-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Faheem Ashraf. Looking to accelerate, he eventually fell for 59 off 58 balls at a strike rate of 101.72.
His fifty proved instrumental in helping Pakistan post 302 in their allotted 50 overs. However, that was only one half of his stellar all-round display. With Pakistan's new-ball bowlers unable to make early breakthroughs, Minhas made a decisive impact with the ball.
He first dismissed a well-set Tom Banton for 57 before producing arguably the delivery of the match to remove England captain Harry Brook. Minhas extracted a sharp turn from a good length on middle stump, beating Brook's outside edge before crashing into the off stump.
The 21-year-old finished with remarkable figures of 6/40 as it became only the fifth instance of a Pakistan player scoring a fifty and taking a five-wicket haul in the same ODI. He also became the first Pakistan player to achieve the feat since Shahid Afridi in 2013.
Abdul Razzaq and Afridi are the only other Pakistan players to have achieved the milestone in ODI cricket. While Razzaq managed it once, Afridi accomplished the feat on three occasions during his illustrious ODI career.
