The Indian Premier League is set to begin its 19th season in a few days, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be tasked with defending their title. Over the years, the tournament has seen several teams dominate the league and eventually lift the trophy at the end of the season.

While it’s crucial to win at home for teams during an edition, the away fixtures also tend to dictate their fate in a season. Most of the teams that have dominated the IPL have had a phenomenal away record. As the quest to win another IPL title begins in a few days, here’s a ranking of all ten teams of the IPL based on their away records:

1. Gujarat Titans (GT)

GT made their IPL debut in the 2022 edition and went on to win the tournament. They reached the final in the following edition as well, but lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Out of the four seasons played so far, Gujarat have qualified for the playoffs thrice and boast a phenomenal away record. Out of the 28 away games, Gujarat have won 18, lost 10, and boast a winning percentage of 64.28%.

2. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

Lucknow are also one of the latest entrants in the IPL, having entered the tournament in 2022 along with Gujarat. LSG qualified for the playoffs for the first two seasons but failed to replicate their success in the last two editions. However, they’re also amongst the top two most successful teams away from home, having won 17 out of 28 matches, with a win percentage of 60.71%.

3. Mumbai Indians (MI)

The joint most successful franchise in IPL history, Mumbai Indians (MI), also boast an impressive record away from home, despite being a part of the tournament since the first season. The five-time champions played their first final in 2010, but came short in the summit clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, MI dominated IPL like no other team, winning five titles over a span of eight seasons.

Much of Mumbai’s success is also due to their phenomenal away record as they have won 64 out of 117 matches, with a win percentage of 54.70%.

4. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) were considered one of the unluckiest franchises in the tournament’s history, having lost three finals in the first 17 seasons. However, their long wait finally ended in 2025, when Rajat Patidar led them to their maiden title victory on his captaincy debut.

Despite winning just one title in 18 seasons, RCB have been one of the most consistent teams in IPL history, as they boast a good record away from home. They have won 60 out of 121 matches, having a win percentage of 49.58%.

5. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are gradually making giant strides towards being counted amongst the greatest IPL sides. They recently claimed their third title victory in 2024, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) comprehensively in the final.

As a result, KKR became the third most successful team in IPL history after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. In terms of away record, KKR rank fifth on the all-time list, having won 54 out of 110 matches with a win percentage of 49.09%.

6. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are another dominant franchise in IPL history, having regularly featured in the playoffs. The Yellow Army is the joint-most successful franchise in the tournament, with five titles to their name. However, despite their massive success, CSK rank quite low in terms of away wins.

They’ve won 46 out of 97 away matches, having a win percentage of 47.42%.

7. Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Punjab Kings are again one of the IPL franchises, whose trophy cabinet may be empty, but they have come mighty close to clinching the title twice, only to lose finals in 2014 and 2025, respectively. Punjab had a great beginning in IPL, finishing second on the points table during the inaugural season in 2008. However, they failed to keep up with the consistency and reached the playoffs six years later in 2014.

They had another 11-year gap for their next knockout appearance in 2025, where they lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final. Despite not winning a trophy, Punjab have a better away record than several champion teams, having won 53 out of 112 matches with a win percentage of 47.32%.

8. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

Sunrisers Hyderabad made their entry into the IPL 2013 and immediately made an impact by qualifying for the playoffs in their debut season. Three editions later, SRH tasted their first success, winning their maiden title in 2016, beating favourites Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a humdinger of a final.

Since then, SRH have played two finals, but failed to make any more additions to their cabinet, losing against CSK and KKR. In terms of away wins, Hyderabad rank among the bottom three, having won 41 out of 91 matches with a win percentage of 45.05%.

9. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

Rajasthan Royals announced themselves in IPL in style, winning the maiden season under the leadership of the legendary Shane Warne. However, since then, they have failed to replicate their success and have only reached one more final in 2022, where they lost to the Gujarat Titans.

Rajasthan have struggled to consistently feature in the knockouts, which is evident from their poor away record. They’ve won 41 out of their 98 away games, having a win percentage of 41.83.

10. Delhi Capitals (DC)

Delhi Capitals showed great signs in the early days of the IPL, reaching the semi-final in the first two editions. They even topped the group in 2012, but failed to make it to the finals as the title continued to elude them. DC’s struggles continued until they again reached the playoffs in the 2019 season.

They came mighty close to winning their maiden title in 2020 but were thrashed in the final by Mumbai. DC are yet to redeem themselves as they still await their first title win. The 2020 runner-ups have the worst record away from home, among all 10 teams, having won 44 out of 110 matches in their history with a win percentage of 40%.
