Afghanistan endured a crushing 170‑run defeat in the second ODI of the three‑match series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on June 17. With the win, Team India sealed the series 2‑0, adding yet another ODI triumph to their tally and underlining their dominance in the format.
This was India’s biggest victory over Afghanistan in ODI history in terms of runs. The foundation was laid by a majestic third‑wicket stand of 224 between Shubman Gill (154) and Ishan Kishan (125), before the bowlers tightened the screws and ensured the visitors never threatened to chase the score down.

Arshdeep Singh (3/45), Prince Yadav (2/56) and Gurnoor Brar (3/60) shared the spoils with the ball to dismantle Afghanistan’s batting order and restrict them to just 232.
Missed milestones amid the dominance
1. Shubman Gill falls short of second ODI double hundred
Gill was unstoppable at Ekana, unfurling a dazzling array of strokes in his 110‑ball 154, studded with 22 fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 140.00. Yet he missed out on joining Rohit Sharma as the only player with multiple ODI double hundreds.
Gill had previously scored 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023, but here he fell 46 runs short of another landmark, leaving fans wondering what might have been.
Gill also missed out on becoming just the fourth India batter (men's) after Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar to score 25 or more fours in an ODI innings. He fell short by three fours.
2. Team India miss chance to set new ODI record score
At 360/3 in 42.2 overs, India looked primed to surpass their highest ODI total of 418. But a sudden collapse saw the last seven wickets tumble for just 42 runs, leaving them all out for 402 in 49.5 overs. Their record remains the 418/5 against West Indies in Indore in December 2011, a match remembered for Virender Sehwag’s blistering 219.
On this occasion, the lower middle order’s failure denied India a chance to rewrite history despite the top order’s brilliance.
