In an era thoroughly dominated by T20s, playing Test cricket remains the greatest honour for a team. Test cricket carries significant weight and defines legacies for generations to admire.

Test cricket is the oldest surviving format of the game and has given rise to ODI and T20Is. As the cricketing fraternity prepares to witness the 150th Anniversary Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from 11-15 March under lights, let's take a look at the five teams that have played the most Tests since the advent of the format.

#1 England (1097 Tests)

England have played the most Tests by any team in the men's circuit. They have had 1097 red-ball appearances with 405 wins and 336 losses. 356 of their matches have ended as draws. Their Test journey began with a 45-run loss to Australia in Melbourne in March 1877, which laid the foundation for one of the most iconic series of all time: The Ashes. They have a win percentage of 36.93% and a loss percentage of 30.63%.

#2 Australia (883 Tests)

Australia are second on the list with 883 Test appearances. They have won 426 Tests and lost 236. The Aussies have been involved in two tied matches and 219 draws. They are currently the No. 1-ranked side in Tests and are also at the top of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. They have a win percentage of 48.25% and a loss percentage of 26.72%.

#3 India (600 Tests)

Team India are currently playing their 600th Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and are in a position of strength, having scored 462 in their first innings. They have registered 186 wins and endured 188 losses thus far. India have also been a part of a tied game and played 224 draws.

#4 West Indies (596 Tests)

West Indies were once an indomitable side in red-ball cricket, thoroughly dominating their contemporaries. They have played 596 Test matches with 187 wins and 224 defeats. Windies have also played a tied game and 184 draws.

#5 New Zealand (487 Tests)

New Zealand occupy the fifth slot with 487 Test appearances. They have won 126 Tests and lost 190 fixtures. The Blackcaps have been involved in 171 draws and were crowned champions of the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021, with a win over Virat Kohli's India in the summit clash at The Rose Bowl.
