Top 3 players with most runs for India in WTC history

India have been one of the most consistent teams in the World Test Championship ever since its inception in 2019. The Asian Giants have the second-best win percentage in the tournament, having won 36 out of 67 matches. India even played the finals of the first two editions in 2021 and 2023, respectively, but ended up on the losing side.

Given India’s rich batting talent, several players have scored heavily in World Test Championship history, making key contributions to their team’s success. Here are India’s top three run-scorers in WTC history:

3. Rohit Sharma

The former India captain takes the third spot with 2716 runs to his name from 40 matches (69 innings) at an average of 41.15 with nine hundreds and eight fifties. Rohit Sharma made a remarkable comeback to Test cricket right at the beginning of the WTC after being promoted to open the innings and played several match-winning knocks for the team, especially on vicious turning tracks.

2. Shubman Gill

The current India Test captain is ranked second, having scored 2917 runs from 42 matches (76 innings) at an average of 42.27 with ten centuries and nine fifties to his name. Shubman Gill had a blockbuster start to his career, having played a key role in India’s historic triumph in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 in Australia. He scored a match-winning 91 in the fourth Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, guiding India to a 2-1 series win. 

Courtesy of his consistent performances, Gill has been handed India’s Test captaincy and continues to be a prolific scorer for the team.

1. Rishabh Pant

The swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter takes the top spot, having scored 2948 runs from 74 innings at an average of 42.11 with six centuries and 18 fifties. Rishabh Pant’s career has transformed ever since his heroics in India’s win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21. He continues to be the backbone of India’s batting thanks to his ability to change the game with his belligerent strokeplay.
