Glenn Phillips has made a strong case to be retained by Gujarat Titans (GT) for the IPL 2027 season after shattering the world record for the most runs scored in a bilateral T20I series on November 1.
Although New Zealand lost the recently concluded five-match series 3-2 against India at home, Phillips had plenty of reasons to celebrate. The right-hander amassed 341 runs at a staggering average of 113.66 and an impressive strike rate of 185.32. He also registered one century and three half-centuries across five innings. Phillips struck 29 fours and 20 sixes during the series.
The Kiwi surpassed Phil Salt, who previously held the record. The England wicketkeeper-batter accumulated 331 runs in a five-match T20I series against West Indies in the Caribbean in December 2023. Salt averaged 82.75 and scored at a strike rate of 185.95, smashing two centuries and proving a constant thorn in West Indies' side.
Phillips' purple patch is likely to boost Gujarat Titans' confidence in him, and the franchise may well consider retaining him, with the retention deadline set for November 15. He endured a forgettable IPL 2026 campaign, managing just 67 runs in five innings at an average of 16.75 and a strike rate of 124.07 before being dropped midway through the season in favour of Jason Holder.
