3 Oldest India men's Test debutants since 2000

Despite the proliferation of T20 leagues worldwide and the surge in lucrative contracts, playing Test cricket remains the highest honour for a modern‑day cricketer. Players spend decades honing their craft in the domestic circuit in relentless pursuit of a Test cap.

While many lose hope by the time they enter their 30s, a few continue to believe in their skills and are eventually rewarded for their hard grind. Several India cricketers have toiled for years in domestic cricket and received their Test debuts when it was least expected. Here is a look at three of India’s oldest debutants in Test cricket:

#3 Sameer Dighe (32 years and 161 days)

Mumbai wicketkeeper‑batter Sameer Dighe made his Test debut for India at 32 years and 161 days. His debut came against Australia in the third Test of the 2001 Border‑Gavaskar Trophy at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Dighe scored four in the first innings before being trapped in front by Shane Warne, but he produced a composed 22 not out in the second innings to help India ace a nerve‑racking chase of 155 with two wickets in hand.

He played six Tests, with his final appearance coming against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo in September 2001.

#2 Saba Karim (32 years and 362 days)

Saba Karim was 32 years and 362 days old when he made his Test debut for India in November 2000 against Bangladesh in a one‑off Test in Dhaka. Karim scored 15 off 46 balls in India’s only innings and claimed one catch as Bangladesh fell to a nine‑wicket defeat. It remained the only red‑ball match of Karim’s international career.

#1 Saransh Jain (33 years and 145 days)

Saransh Jain became the oldest player to make his Test debut for India when he was named in the XI for the second Test of the recently concluded two‑match series against Sri Lanka at the SSC.

Saransh returned figures of 2/69 in 20.4 overs in the first innings and followed it with 1/98 in 37 overs in the second as Sri Lanka eked out a hard‑fought draw.
