Sri Lanka rewrote their ODI record books on Thursday (October 22), successfully chasing down 430 against England in Match No. 3 of the ongoing tri-series in Pakistan at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. It is Sri Lanka's highest-ever successful run chase, surpassing their previous best of 322, which also came against England at Leeds in 2006.
Earlier, Sri Lanka's bowlers endured a torrid outing as England piled on 429/4. Captain Harry Brook produced a historic knock, registering the fastest double century in ODI cricket, reaching the milestone in just 114 balls. He also became the first England batter to score an ODI double hundred, finishing on 202 off 116 deliveries, studded with 21 fours and 10 sixes at a strike rate of 174.13.
Brook received strong support from Tom Banton (50 off 51), Joe Root (69 off 66) and Will Jacks (66 off 30) as England dismantled the Sri Lankan attack with an aggressive batting display.
At the halfway mark, England appeared firmly in control, but the Lankan Lions produced a remarkable response to pull off one of the greatest run chases in ODI history. Pavan Rathnayake led the charge with a superb 130 off 106 balls, striking 15 fours and three sixes. Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka chipped in with 97 apiece, though Shanaka's innings came at a blistering strike rate of 194.00.
Janith Liyanage then provided the finishing touch with a sensational unbeaten 61 off just 27 deliveries, smashing seven fours and three sixes as Sri Lanka completed the chase with one ball to spare.
