When ODI cricket was introduced in 1971, players took some time to adapt to the new shorter format of the game, as they initially played it in the same manner as Test cricket. However, as it grew older, batters understood its tempo and stunned the cricketing world with their rapid scoring rates.

The high-scoring rates led to higher totals as 300 became the new norm in ODIs. However, there have also been a handful of occasions where teams surpassed the 400-run mark in ODI cricket, setting new standards in the 50-over format. Australia was the first team to score 400 in ODIs against South Africa in 2006.

As batters continue to set higher benchmarks in 50-over cricket, here are the top three teams with the most 400-plus totals in ODIs:

2. England (7)

England were among those teams that made a late entry into the 400 club, breaching it for the first time in 2015 against New Zealand in Birmingham. Despite being the late entrants in the club, England find themselves on the second spot in the list, having breached the landmark seven times in their history. They also hold the record for the highest ever total in ODI history, having notched up 498 vs the Netherlands in 2022.

1. India (8)

The Men in Blue breached the 400-run mark for the first time in their history during the 2007 ODI World Cup against Bermuda in Port of Spain. Since then, India have been among the teams consistently breaching the mark courtesy of their incredible batting talent. India have scored the joint-most 400-plus totals in ODI history (8), with their highest score being 418 vs West Indies in 2011.

1. South Africa (8)

The Proteas were the second team in the world to score 400 runs in ODIs, during the famous match in Johannesburg, where they overhauled the massive target of 435 vs Australia in 2006. Since then, South Africa have made a habit of notching up 400-plus scores, having eight such totals to their name. Their highest ODI score is 439, achieved against West Indies in 2015.
