England Test captain Ben Stokes has called time on his international career, choosing to step away on his own terms. The talismanic allrounder announced his decision before play on day four of the ongoing third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

While there is still a day left in the match, with England needing 270 runs more and six wickets in hand, Joe Root, unbeaten on 9 and Emilio Gay on 6, there will be no sight of Stokes on the final day.

His final act was vintage Stokes as he came out to open alongside Ben Duckett and left the spectators spellbound: first, he used his feet to Zak Foulkes and launched him for a mighty six over long‑off. Then, he smacked Nathan Smith over square leg, dispatching a length ball from outside off, deep into the stands.

As arguably the greatest allrounder of the modern era walks away into the dusk, here is a look at the records Stokes added to his CV during a career that spanned 14 years, 10 months, and 5 days since his debut against Ireland in Dublin on August 25, 2011.

Records that define Stokes’ career

  • Fastest 250 in Test cricket by balls: Reached in just 196 balls during the same Cape Town innings in 2016.
