Wearing an India jersey is a dream millions of kids chase, but only a handful withstand the rigours of the pursuit. Coming from a small town named Suriyawan in the Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh, Yashasvi Jaiswal took it all in his stride and scripted his own fairytale run to the Indian dressing room.
At the tender age of 11, Jaiswal moved to Mumbai in 2013, and the lack of financial resources forced him to sell pani puri (an Indian snack) and share the tents that belonged to the groundsmen who prepared pitches at Azad Maidan.

Jaiswal's fortunes took a pleasant turn when he met his mentor Jwala Singh. Jwala took him under his wings and looked after his needs, prompting Jaiswal to focus primarily on his game.
Rising through the ranks in age-group cricket, Jaiswal made headlines when he became the youngest to score a double hundred in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2019. He scored the most runs (564) for Mumbai and registered the highest average (112.80) among the top-10 leading run-getters in the tournament.
His imperious run in the domestic circuit prompted the selectors to name him in India's squad for the ICC Men's U19 World Cup 2020 in South Africa.
Jaiswal was the fulcrum of India's batting at the global event and churned out 400 runs in six games at a staggering average of 133.33, including a century and four fifties. He was named the Player of the Tournament as India fell marginally short of the title, losing to Bangladesh by three wickets.
His exploits at ICC's flagship event for age-group cricketers grabbed the eyes of Rajasthan Royals, and they splurged Rs 2.4 crore to rope him in at the IPL 2020 auction. After largely warming the bench in his debut IPL season, Jaiswal got 10 games in IPL 2021 and scored 249 runs at an impressive strike rate of 148.21 with the help of a fifty.
The 2022 season was more or less the same story, but the southpaw looked a class apart in the 16th edition of the lucrative tournament.
Jaiswal smashed the fastest fifty of the tournament off just 13 balls against KKR on May 11, 2023, and became a household name. His stellar season saw him aggregate 625 runs in 14 games at 48.07 with a strike rate of 163.61. He also scored a sublime century, albeit in a losing cause, against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede and was adjudged Player of the Match.

One and a half months after the end of the IPL, Jaiswal received the greatest gift of his cricketing career when the selectors named him in India's squad for the two-match Test series in the Caribbean. The maiden Test call-up came after a prolific run in two successive Ranji Trophy seasons.
He racked up 498 runs in three games at 83.00 with the help of three centuries and a fifty in the 2021/22 season, and backed it up by aggregating 315 runs at 45.00, including a century and a fifty in the 2022-23 season for Mumbai.
Drawing confidence from his performance in the first-class circuit, Jaiswal took to Test cricket like fish to water and smashed a century on debut, scoring 171 in the first Test at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica. He won the Player of the Match award for his knock as India trounced the Windies by an innings and 141 runs.
Jaiswal has come a long way since his debut in July 2023 and is one of India's premier batters in the red-ball format following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

While Jaiswal has made the most of his opportunities in red-ball cricket, his white-ball career hasn't really taken off.
The competition for places in India's white-ball squads has kept Jaiswal on the fringe despite his marvellous T20I record. He has played 23 T20Is for the Men in Blue and amassed 723 runs at a magnificent strike rate of 164.31, including a hundred and five half-centuries.
He was a part of the Indian team that clinched the gold medal in the Asian Games Men's Cricket Competition in Hangzhou, China, in 2023. Though he didn't get game time, Jaiswal was also a member of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2024.

With legends like Virat and Rohit nearing the end of their ODI careers, it won't be long before Jaiswal gets a shot at establishing his credentials in the white-ball circuit.
