The highly anticipated India vs Afghanistan quarterfinal in the men's cricket competition at the ongoing Asian Games is under serious threat from rain.

According to AccuWeather, there is a 97% chance of showers on Monday (September 28), the day scheduled for the quarterfinals at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. Pakistan will take on Hong Kong in the first quarterfinal, while India will face Afghanistan in the second.

Rain has already disrupted the tournament. On Saturday, two preliminary-round matches were affected by inclement weather. While the clash between hosts Japan and Nepal saw only 15 overs of play, the Malaysia vs Oman fixture was abandoned without a toss.

Who qualifies if the India vs Afghanistan quarterfinal is abandoned?

If the India vs Afghanistan quarterfinal is washed out, India will advance to the semifinals by virtue of being the higher-seeded side based on the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings.

India are currently the No. 1-ranked T20I team in the world, alongside England, with 269 rating points. Afghanistan, meanwhile, are ranked 10th and have 218 rating points.

The two teams last met in a three-match T20I series at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, where India completed a 3-0 whitewash over Afghanistan.

While India have retained the core of that squad for the Asian Games, Afghanistan's side looks significantly different. Only Darwish Rasooli (captain) and Abdollah Ahmadzai from the squad that toured India earlier this year have been included in Afghanistan's Asian Games contingent.
