India's road to WTC Final 2027: Complete qualification scenario explained

As India prepare to take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series in the Island nation, starting August 15 at the Galle International Cricket Stadium (GICS), a common question is on the minds of every Indian cricket fan: Can the Shubman Gill-led side qualify for the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 Final at the Oval next year?
Team India began their WTC 2025-27 campaign with a 2-2 series-levelling finish against England in their backyard. They then blanked a feeble West Indies side at home 2-0. But just when it seemed they had arrested their red-ball slide, India's ghosts returned to haunt them on turning pitches at home.

The reigning Test champions South Africa, under the leadership of Temba Bavuma, thumped India 2-0 in their backyard and exposed their preparedness against spin on rank turners. Off-spinner Simon Harmer ripped India's batting order to shreds, claiming as many as 17 wickets, averaging 8.94, and clinching the Player of the Series award.
India adopted the strategy of preparing raging turners at home in the past 15 years. It worked in their favour as the pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin proved unnegotiable in such conditions. However, a transition in the Test side, following the retirements of Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, has depleted their strength. Therefore, they are falling into their own trap.
Currently, they are fifth on the WTC table with four wins, as many losses and a solitary draw after nine matches. They have a points percentage (PCT) of 48.15. A PCT over 60% keeps teams in contention in terms of qualification for the final.
India qualified for the 2021-23 final with a PCT of 58.80%. However, Australia (67.54%) and South Africa (69.44%) had a PCT exceeding 65%, helping them cement berths in the final of the previous cycle.
India have nine Tests remaining in the ongoing cycle: two against Sri Lanka (away), as many against the Kiwis in New Zealand and five at home against the Aussies. If India are to reach a PCT of over 60%, they will have to secure 78 points. Six wins and a couple of draws would take them to 80 points, whereas seven victories would take them to 84, assuming they aren't docked any points by the ICC.
However, their form at home has hit rock bottom, with a 3-0 loss to the Blackcaps and a 2-0 defeat to the Proteas. Therefore, the Gill and Gautam Gambhir-led side has its task cut out.
