Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured a forgettable IPL 2026 season. The five-time champions were without their most experienced leader, MS Dhoni, who was sidelined with a calf injury. As a result, CSK managed only six wins, finishing eighth on the points table with 12 points.

Previously known as the "Dad's Army" for relying on experienced players, CSK placed their faith in several youngsters, but the gamble did not pay off as expected. However, the franchise still has a number of players in its ranks who could help turn its fortunes around in the coming years.

Here's a look at three players who fit into Chennai Super Kings' long-term plans:

#1 Sanju Samson

Chennai Super Kings acquired Sanju Samson through a player trade with Rajasthan Royals, with Ravindra Jadeja moving in the opposite direction. CSK signed Samson for INR 18 crore, and he appears set to play a key role in the franchise's future plans.

A wicketkeeper-batter and an accomplished leader, Samson looks like an ideal successor to MS Dhoni, who has fulfilled both roles for CSK since the inception of the IPL. Samson's ability to bat anywhere from the top order to the middle order also gives the team management valuable flexibility.

#2 Ayush Mhatre

Ayush Mhatre is one for the future and looks poised to become a pillar of CSK's batting lineup. The youngster impressed in IPL 2026, scoring 201 runs in six innings at an average of 33.50 and a strike rate of 177.87, including two half-centuries.

Mhatre is also a promising leadership prospect. He captained India to their sixth ICC Men's U19 World Cup title earlier this year in Zimbabwe and was recently appointed vice-captain of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy side. Given his rapid development, it may not be long before he emerges as a leader at the senior level as well.

#3 Dewald Brevis

Dewald Brevis is yet to fully establish himself in the IPL, but his immense potential has already been evident on the international stage. The right-hander has scored 606 runs in 27 IPL matches at a strike rate of 146.02, including two half-centuries.

One of the most destructive ball-strikers in world cricket, Brevis adds significant firepower and depth to CSK's middle order. With age on his side and his talent unquestionable, he could become a vital part of the franchise's core in the years ahead.
