During the early days of international cricket, players of all shapes and sizes were welcomed to play the sport at the highest level and peak fitness wasn’t considered paramount to succeed. However, ever since the turn of the century, there has been special focus on players’ fitness in international cricket, with the margins getting smaller in every game.
A momentary brilliance in the field or a quick single can prove to be a big game-changing incident in the context of a match. Hence, it’s essential for players to maintain the highest standards of fitness, which helps them to give peak performance in the field in every department.
Over the past few years, several players have undergone incredible transformations to meet the modern fitness requirements of the game. Here are three such players:
1. Sarfaraz Khan
Sarfaraz burst onto the scene in 2015 as a talented young batter playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, over the years, he gained weight, which became a major hindrance to his team India selection for a long time. After being a part of the Test team for a year, Sarfaraz Khan was dropped again in May 2025.
However, since then, the youngster has worked tremendously on his fitness and undergone a sensational transformation, having become a completely different person.
2. Rohit Sharma
The former India captain is counted amongst the greatest batters to have ever played for the country. Rohit Sharma even led India to back-to-back ICC triumphs, guiding them to the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025. Despite his remarkable leadership, Rohit was widely criticised for being overweight.
However, he put all the criticism to bed after undergoing a remarkable transformation in 2025, returning as fitter and leaner to international cricket.
3. Pat Cummins
The Australian Test and ODI captain made his debut in 2011 across formats, but an early stress fracture injury meant that he spent a long time away from cricket. However, the speedster worked extensively on his fitness and returned a lot stronger to be counted amongst the best fast bowlers of the world.
