Cricketers have a large fan base earned through their remarkable performances on the pitch. Players are often catapulted to overwhelming stardom by their followers, who treat them as demigods. There has also been a section of cricketers who’ve given it back to their fans and society at large through their charitable initiatives and philanthropic work.
Many players run charitable organisations to help the needy and inspire their fans to work for the noble cause. Here are three such cricketers who dedicate time from their busy schedules for the good of society through their foundations:
1. Virat Kohli
Apart from leaving bowlers befuddled on the pitch with his brilliant shots, Kohli also works for the betterment of society through his foundation named after him. The Virat Kohli Foundation was established in 2013 by the star batter, and it works towards supporting emerging athletes with an aim to empower underprivileged youth.
2. Yuvraj Singh
The legendary India all-rounder is an inspiration not only due to his cricketing achievements but also for defeating cancer. Yuvraj was diagnosed with the fatal disease in 2011 and made a comeback in the Indian team after completing his chemotherapy in 2012.
After his recovery, he started the ‘YOUWECAN’ foundation in 2012 to help people fight the disease. Through his foundation, Yuvraj aims to empower people to defeat cancer through awareness, early detection, patient support and survivor empowerment.
3. Gautam Gambhir
The legendary India batter and the current coach of the team is always at the forefront when it comes to philanthropic work. Gautam Gambhir also runs a foundation under his name, founded in the year 2014. The Gautam Gambhir Foundation works for the overall well-being of society by supporting the education of the children of Indian army personnel who lost their lives on the battlefield. It also works towards uplifting children of sex workers and providing food to economically disadvantaged people.
