3 Cricketers who lost their lives after being murdered

While the field of cricket is known for celebrating joyous and momentous occasions, the sport has also had its fair share of tragedies. Over the years, cricket has lost some of its finest players in heartbreaking accidents or illnesses.

However, a handful of cricketers have also lost their lives after being murdered. Here are three cricketers whose lives were tragically cut short after they were murdered:

1. Jeff Stollmeyer

Jeff Stollmeyer was one of the most prominent cricketers to have represented the West Indies. The stylish right-handed batter played 32 Tests in his career, scoring 2159 runs and taking 13 wickets. He also captained his team in 13 matches and guided them to three victories.

Stollmeyer was 68 when he was attacked at his home in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1989. He was shot five times and beaten during the incident. Despite receiving medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries.

2. Norman Reid

Norman Reid was a South African cricketer who represented his country in one Test match. Reid's life came to a tragic end in 1947, when he was shot dead. His wife was subsequently identified as the shooter. It is believed that she suffered from mental health problems and also took her own life afterwards.

3. Dhammika Niroshana

Dhammika Niroshana was one of the promising young cricketers in Sri Lanka. He captained the country's Under-19 side and was touted as their next superstar.

Niroshana never made his senior international debut, but he represented Sri Lanka at Under-19 level and even played domestic cricket. He featured in 12 first-class and eight List A matches.

In July 2024, Niroshana was shot dead outside his home in Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka. He was reportedly with his wife and two children when the incident occurred.
