India are one of the most successful teams in the history of international cricket, having risen through the ranks over the years, with their remarkable performances. Today, the Men in Blue are known to be the true powerhouse of the cricketing world, dominating two out of the three formats.

However, amid their several achievements, there have been a few moments in the Indian cricketing history, where they lost against not-so-established teams. Here are three Indian captains who lost to associate nations:

1. Srinivas Venkataraghavan (vs Sri Lanka in 1979)

After failing to win a single game in the maiden edition of the World Cup, Sri Lanka stunned India with a 47-run defeat during the second edition in 1979. Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 238/5 with Sunil Wettimuny (67 off 120) top-scoring. In reply, India were bundled out for 191 in 54.1 overs and suffered a shocking defeat. The loss came before Sri Lanka became a full-member nation in 1981.


2. Mohammad Azharuddin (vs Kenya, 1998)

During a tri-series match, India were stunned by Kenya for the first time in their ODI history, losing by 69 runs in Gwalior, 1998. Batting first, Kenya posted 265/5 in their 50 overs with Maurice Odumbe (83 off 91) and Ravi Shah (70 off 68) top scoring for their team. In reply, India were bundled out for just 196 as Steve Tikolo (3/29) and Maurice Odumbe (3/14) picked up three wickets each.


3. Sourav Ganguly (vs Kenya, 2001)

Kenya beat India for the second time in their ODI history in October 2001, during another tri-series tournament in Gqeberha. Batting first, Kenya posted 246/6 in their 50 overs with half-centuries from Kennedy Otieno  (64 off 95), Ravi Shah (50 off 75) and Thomas Odoyo (51 off 52). In reply, India were bundled out for just 176 as Joseph Angara (3/30) and Thomas Odoyo (3/41) scalped three wickets each.
