Top 3 contenders for KKR captaincy after Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane's retirement has left Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) searching for a new leader ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. Unless the franchise acquires an established captain through the trade window or at the IPL auction later this year, KKR will have to appoint a skipper from their existing squad.

With the trade window remaining open until a week before the auction and reopening after the bidding event, the franchise still has time to strengthen its leadership group. However, if KKR stick with their current roster, these three players could well emerge as the leading captaincy contenders.

1. Rinku Singh

Rinku Singh is the frontrunner to succeed Rahane after KKR elevated him to vice-captain ahead of IPL 2026 to groom him for a leadership role.

Although he lacks extensive experience at the highest level, Rinku has already shown promising leadership credentials in domestic cricket. He captained Meerut Mavericks to the UPT20 title in 2024 before guiding them to a runners-up finish in 2025, winning 13 of their 18 matches across the two seasons.

He has also led Uttar Pradesh in List A cricket since taking over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar before the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Given KKR's long-term planning, Rinku appears to be the natural choice.

2. Sunil Narine

If KKR prefer experience and stability, Sunil Narine could be an attractive option. The veteran all-rounder has been with the franchise since 2012 and remains one of its most influential figures.

Narine is the highest wicket-taker among overseas bowlers in IPL history and has been a constant presence in the Knight Riders family, representing not only KKR but also Trinbago Knight Riders, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Los Angeles Knight Riders. While he has never captained KKR, his immense experience and understanding of the franchise's culture make him a credible short-term candidate.

3. Rovman Powell

Rovman Powell is the dark horse in the race. Unlike the other contenders, he arrives with good international captaincy experience, having led the West Indies in 37 T20Is between 2022 and 2024.

Although Powell has had sporadic appearances for KKR, playing two matches in IPL 2025 and 11 in IPL 2026, his proven leadership credentials could work in his favour. If KKR opt for an experienced tactician rather than a long-term project, Powell could emerge as a surprise appointment.
