3 major records MS Dhoni couldn't break as India captain

MS Dhoni is counted amongst the greatest cricketers to have played the game, having taken India to unprecedented heights under his leadership. After making his debut in 2004, Dhoni quickly rose through the ranks and assumed leadership of the team across all three formats.

Under his captaincy, India scripted several historical triumphs, winning the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup after a long gap of 28 years in 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, besides many more victories in bilateral and continental tournaments.

While Dhoni broke several records with his shrewd leadership, there were a few achievements that were left untouched by him. Here’s a list of records MS Dhoni couldn’t break during his captaincy tenure:

1. Winning most ICC Titles

MS Dhoni ended the long drought for a world title for India, guiding the team to the T20 World Cup win in 2007. He followed it up with the ODI World Cup win in 2011 and the Champions Trophy victory in 2013, taking his ICC titles count to three.

He missed the record for winning the most ICC trophies as captain in men’s cricket by a whisker, as another title would’ve got him level with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who led his team to four ICC titles.

2. Most matches as ODI captain

MS Dhoni captained India for a good ten years, leading the side in 200 ODIs during his career. Under his leadership, India won 110 matches and lost 74 games. However, he couldn’t surpass Ricky Ponting's record of captaining in 230 ODIs, finishing 3rd after Ponting and Stephen Fleming, who captained in 218 Men's ODIs.

3. Most sixes as captain in T20Is

Even after almost seven years since his international retirement, Dhoni is known as the fiercest striker of the cricket ball. As captain, he slammed 34 sixes in the shortest format from 62 innings. He missed the record for most sixes by a captain in T20Is by seven big hits as Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi topped the list with 41 sixes from 40 innings at the time Dhoni left captaincy.
