In the 149-year-long history of Test cricket, several batters have etched their names in the history books, scoring century after century. It’s a dream of every batter to have a Test hundred against their name, but not all get to achieve it.
The game has also seen some players build memorable careers without ever touching the three-figure mark. Here are three batters who registered the most 50-plus scores in men's Test cricket without ever scoring a century:
1. Niroshan Dickwella
Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella occupies the top spot with 23 scores of 50 or more without converting any of them into a Test hundred.
His highest score remains 96, which came against the West Indies at North Sound in 2021.
2. Chetan Chauhan
Former India opener Chetan Chauhan was one of the most dependable Test openers for his country during the 1970s. He made his debut against New Zealand in 1969 in Mumbai. He scored 2,084 runs in his 40-Test career at an average of 31.57, but never managed to score a century.
The right-handed batter registered 16 fifties and even came close to scoring his maiden Test century against Australia in Adelaide in 1981, but was eventually dismissed on 97, which remains his highest score.
3. Ken Mackay
Australia's Ken Mackay takes the third spot with 13 scores of 50 or more. The left-handed all-rounder played 37 Tests between 1956 and 1963, after making his debut against England at Lord's. He scored 1,507 runs in his career at an average of 33.48.
Mackay's highest Test score was 89 against India in Madras (now Chennai) in 1960. Despite his consistent performances, he never touched the three-figure mark.
