The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 may have officially begun on June 12 with the curtain‑raiser between England and Sri Lanka, but for fans in India and Pakistan, the real start comes on June 14 with the biggest clash of the tournament, India vs Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

While the rivalry in women’s cricket is not as intense as in the men’s game, India hold a clear edge with a head‑to‑head record of 13‑3 in WT20Is. Yet Pakistan have twice stunned India at the Women’s T20 World Cup, victories that remain iconic in their cricketing history. As both sides prepare to launch their campaigns, let’s revisit those two encounters.

2012 - Galle Thriller (Match 11, Group A, October 1)

Pakistan elected to bat first but struggled on a bowler‑friendly surface. Captain Sana Mir (26 off 38) and Nain Abidi (25 off 34) were the only batters to show resistance, guiding Pakistan to 98/9 in 20 overs.

India’s bowlers, Jhulan Goswami, Anuja Patil, and Rasanara Parwin, each picked up two wickets, setting up what looked like a straightforward chase. However, India faltered under pressure. Only Mithali Raj (16 off 29), Punam Raut (18 off 24), and Goswami (21 off 24) reached double figures.

Pakistan’s Nida Dar was outstanding with her off‑spin, returning figures of 3/12. India needed 14 runs off the final over, but Mir’s composure restricted them to 12, sealing a one‑run win. Dar was deservedly named Player of the Match (POTM).

2016 - Rain‑Affected Victory in Delhi (Match 7, Group B, March 19)

Four years later, Pakistan struck again in Delhi. Electing to field first, their disciplined bowling made scoring difficult. India’s batting struggled, with Mithali Raj (16 off 35) and Harmanpreet Kaur (16 off 29) unable to accelerate. Veda Krishnamurthy (24 off 19) and Goswami (14 off 14) added late runs, but India managed only 96 in 20 overs.

Pakistan’s chase began steadily through Nahida Khan (14 off 15) and Sidra Amin (26 off 26). However, skipper Bismah Maroof’s 5 off 18 balls gave India hope. The Indian bowlers maintained discipline, keeping Pakistan at 77/6 in 16 overs when rain intervened.

With no resumption possible, Pakistan were declared winners by two runs under the DLS method, securing their second historic victory over India at the Women’s T20 World Cup.

These two matches remain defining moments for Pakistan, proving that despite India’s overall dominance, the Women in Green are capable of producing upsets on the biggest stage. As the teams prepare for their 2026 showdown, Pakistan will look to draw inspiration from these past triumphs.
