Creating a squad that covers all the bases is not an easy task for the team management of the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams. When there are plenty of options in the auctions - mega and mini - and the chance to trade players, it becomes a complicated exercise to determine the best possible combination that would fight and win matches in different situations.
Auctions can sometimes go wrong and the outcome of them is seen later on the field. But, sometimes even a promising squad on paper can fail to click as a team and lead to a failure. Therefore, there is no guarantee of what will work and what will not. Based on past performances, current form, team dynamics, and combinations the following list of three weakest squads has been compiled.

Here are the three weakest squads in IPL 2026 -
3) Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR had a dramatic downfall last season after winning the title in 2024. The franchise finished eighth after the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025 reshuffled the squad. On the eve of the 2026 season, the team is in a different crisis. It has been hit with injuries to Akash Deep and Harshit Rana while there is uncertainty around Matheesha Pathirana's availability.
That leaves the pace attack which comprises Vaibhav Arora, Blessing Muzarabani, Kartik Tyagi, Navdeep Saini and Umran Malik. While they have quality, KKR lack the top-brass experience of the aforementioned trio. Cameron Green can be an option as well, but the INR 252 million man might be under immense pressure due to the price tag. Add to that the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane being under the scanner which makes it difficult to pick KKR to go far in the season.
2) Gujarat Titans
GT boast quite a few big names across the batting and bowling departments. However, stars alone do not lead to a sustained winning run as every member's contributions matter. Starting with the top order, captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are expected to be rock solid again while Jos Buttler's form is a real concern as the Englishman had a terrible T20 World Cup, averaging 10.9. Even if Buttler gets back into form, there is a question mark over the rest of the batting order which had been hit and miss last season.
The bowling department had one of the worst averages and strike rates last season. While some of the pacers might be incisive on conducive surfaces, it remains to be seen how they go about their business on flat wickets. What can compound their problems further is the lack of effectiveness of Rashid Khan in recent times. The spin department might lose some steam if the Afghan does not find a way to be deceptive again. All in all, GT does have the firepower but the combinations raise some doubts.
1) Chennai Super Kings
It is another squad that has a smattering of stars, but also comprises a good chunk of Indian domestic talent which is unproven on the IPL stage. As a matter of fact, CSK are going through a transition phase and there would be a bit of trial and error at some stages. The inclusion of Sanju Samson really boosts the top-order stocks and the Gaikwad-Samson opening pair appears to be a sound decision. But that pushes down Ayush Mhatre who was impressive as an opener last season, scoring 240 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 188.97. Will it affect the 18-year-old's performance? Time will tell.
When it comes to the bowling, the franchise traded away Ravindra Jadeja who was a key player. Prashant Veer, who was bought for INR 142 million, is the natural replacement. The leg spinner, however, is uncapped in the IPL and has played only nine T20s so far. Overall, the bowling appears to be a hit-and-miss. Given the combinations, the team is forecast to have a season which might not be too different from last year.
