India’s tour of the UK began with a jolt as they suffered their first-ever international defeat to Ireland, going down by 34 runs in the opening T20I in Belfast. The loss has not only stunned fans but has also raised questions about India’s execution.

Ireland’s new-look pace duo of Matt Hollard and Jai Moondra proved decisive. Moondra struck early to remove Sanju Samson and then dismissed Shivam Dube, while Hollard ripped through the middle order, accounting for Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar. Their combined figures of 5/53 effectively broke India’s chase and highlighted the potency of Ireland’s new-look attack.

Reflecting on the defeat, opener Abhishek Sharma admitted at the post-match press conference that India’s bowlers had failed to match the discipline shown by their opponents.

"We have the same plan for all teams. Our video analysts and coaches have enough information about all the bowlers," Abhishek said. "I wouldn't say he was a surprise for us, but he bowled really well. The areas that they bowled in as a bowling unit were much better than us. And that's how you learn as a group. We also got to learn from them today. So it was just one of those games."

Abhishek stressed that Ireland’s victory was well-earned, pointing to their execution across departments.

"I feel there was something in the wicket. Like when Ireland were batting, there were a few shots that they executed [well], while there were many shots that were difficult to hit," Abhishek added. "So I feel they bowled well [during India's chase] in that regard, and executed their plans. As for the rest of India's batsmen, I think very limited shots came off. But they planned really well.

"I think that as a group, the way Ireland did with the bat, the ball and even in the field, they truly deserved this victory. There were some things we couldn't execute as a team. But you learn little things from every match and I feel this was one of those matches. We learnt a lot of things. But as a group they played really well. They truly deserved the victory."

The defeat also raises selection dilemmas for India ahead of the second T20I. With the series on the line, management may be reluctant to experiment, potentially delaying Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut.

For Ireland, the win is historic, their first over India in any format, and sets up a golden chance to clinch the series 2-0. For India, it’s now about regrouping quickly and proving that one bad night doesn’t define their tour.
