Australia completed a perfect revenge against Bangladesh after suffering an embarrassing defeat in the first Test as they got them bundled out for just 64 on Day 1 of the second match at Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay. After captain Pat Cummins won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat, a menacing Mitchell Starc ran through the visitors' batting lineup in no time, producing one of his finest spells.
The left-arm speedster didn’t waste much time getting himself going, dismissing Shadman Islam for a golden duck on the very first ball of the match. It was the fourth time in his career that Mitchell Starc struck on the first ball of a Test. He made further inroads into the Bangladesh batting in his second over, getting rid of last match’s centurion, Tanzid Hasan Tamim for a duck.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also had no answers to his sharp-inswinger and returned to the pavilion for a golden duck, getting out lbw for a golden duck as well.
There was no one stopping Starc's carnage as he continued to wreak havoc in his third straight over, dismissing Mominul Haque, who was caught by Cameron Green at gully as Bangladesh slipped further into trouble.
The wicket-taking spree continued for the speedster as he further removed Litton Das, taking just 22 deliveries to register his 19th five-wicket haul in Tests, the fourth-fastest five-for in history as Bangladesh slipped to 12/5 in 6.4 overs.
Starc goes past Steyn's Test wickets tally
Starc already holds the record for the fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket, having completed the feat in just 15 deliveries against the West Indies in 2025. During his mind-boggling spell, he also surpassed South Africa’s Dale Steyn on the all-time Test wicket-takers’ list. Starc moved past Steyn’s 439 wickets to 440, taking outright 10th place overall and fifth among fast bowlers.
He finished with figures of 6/12 in ten overs, while captain Pat Cummins (3/25) also chipped in with three wickets (3/25) to skittle Bangladesh for their fourth-lowest score in Tests.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh also didn’t allow Australia to run too far ahead of the game as they finished Day 1 on 165/8, leading by 101 runs with Cameron Green (51*) and Nathan Lyon (10*) at the crease. Shoriful Islam (6/35) scalped his maiden five-wicket haul to keep Bangladesh in the game after a horrendous batting show.
