Australian players likely to make tough IPL calls ahead of gruelling schedule: Andrew McDonald

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has hinted at making some tough decisions regarding their players’ participation in next year’s Indian Premier League 2027 (IPL 2027) due to a hectic national schedule. Australia are scheduled to play 20 Tests and 14 white-ball fixtures in a 12-month period, beginning with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting on August 13.

During the period, Australia's relentless schedule will feature six ODIs in Zimbabwe and South Africa, three Tests in South Africa, eight white-ball matches at home against England, four home Tests against New Zealand, a five-Test tour of India, a one-off 150th anniversary Test against England at home in March, and a five-Test Ashes tour of England in June and July. 

If Australia qualify for the World Test Championship final, it will also be added to the already packed calendar. There’s also likely to be a home white-ball series against New Zealand in late August, followed by the ODI World Cup 2027 in October and November.

Ahead of the packed calendar, McDonald has asserted that IPL is an integral part of their management plan and will need to balance it out amid other international commitments.

"I know people will start talking about the IPL and filling that time and what does that look like. I've said this before, the IPL is part of our management plan for a lot of our players, and to expose our best players in what I believe is the best competition in terms of T20 cricket has its performance benefits as well. You've just got to balance that out,” McDonald told Cricinfo.

However, he also mentioned that the players won’t shy away from making decisions, prioritising playing for Australia.

"What I will say about our players is they make good decisions across the journey, and that's underpinned by discussions with the medical team and coaches. They want to play for Australia. There's an Ashes on the back of that. Hopefully, a World Test Championship final and into a World Cup. There's a lot of important priority cricket for Australia in that period. So we're going to have to make some decisions,” he added.

Decision on IPL likely to be taken after Test series in India: McDonald

McDonald didn’t completely rule out playing in the IPL and said that the final decision will be taken after the five-match Test series against India in 2027.

"The starting point is that you can do it all, and I think if you start from that point, then you can make decisions according to that. Whereas if you're just defeatist and say, 'well, that doesn't fit', how do we know where Pat Cummins is going to be come the fourth Test against New Zealand? How do we know where Mitchell Starc is going to be at the end of South Africa? We don't know. So you gather all that information as you go across it. You make decisions from Test match to Test match, and the IPL will be a decision once again at the back end of the India [Test series],” he said.

"The starting point, and this isn't to keep people happy; the starting point is that the IPL can fit, and if it doesn't fit, then you know these players, along with the management, have been willing to make those decisions,” McDonald concluded.

The five-match Test series between Australia and India will begin on January 21 and will end on March 3. It will be followed by a two-month-long IPL season where Australia stars such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, Travis Head and Josh Inglis are expected to play.

The players will have to confirm their availability ahead of the retention deadline for all ten franchises before the mini-auction for next year’s edition. If a player pulls out from playing in the tournament without any injury after confirming his availability ahead of the auction, they will face a two-year ban as per the new IPL rules formulated in 2024.
