Hobart Hurricanes continued their magnificent run in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) as they hammered Adelaide Strikers by 37 runs on Friday, January 9, at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Strikers skipper Matt Short won the bat flip and put the hosts into bat first. Mitchell Owen looked unstoppable and launched an onslaught on the Strikers' new-ball pair of Luke Wood and Liam Scott. Owen exhibited commanding stroke‑play and only intensified the debate around his omission from Australia’s T20 World Cup squad.

Owen raced to 33 off just nine balls, laced with two fours and four sixes, at a strike rate of 366.66. He looked in ominous touch but got carried away a bit and was caught at deep cover as he tried to clear the ropes off a fuller length delivery outside off. In came Rehan Ahmed and continued the power-hitting spree, scoring 29 off 17 balls.

Wicketkeeper batter Matthew Wade also scored a brisk 27 at a strike rate of 142.10 as Hurricanes posted 178 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Jamie Overton was the pick of all the Strikers bowlers as he returned figures of 2/13.

In reply, Strikers lost the plot from the outset as they lost half their side for just 31 in six overs. Riley Meredith was too hot to handle for Strikers as he got rid of the Adelaide captain and Mackenzie Harvey to start with a double-wicket maiden to get his spell underway.

Liam Scott batted with aplomb but kept running out of partners at the other end. Scott remained unbeaten on 91, hammering six fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 156.89.

Nathan Ellis also claimed two wickets, whereas Rishad Hossain finished with figures of 3/26 in his four overs. Hurricanes have consolidated their position at the top of the points table. They now have 12 points with six wins and two losses after eight games. On the contrary, Strikers are fifth with six points, including three victories and four defeats in seven games.
