Australia batting allrounder Cameron Green has confirmed he is fit and available for selection for the Test series decider at Newlands, Cape Town, starting on October 27. Green, 27, is willing to bat anywhere in the order but believes No. 4 or No. 5 best suits his game. The right-hander suffered an abdominal injury during the third ODI against South Africa on September 30, ruling him out of the first two Tests in Durban and Gqeberha.
"I'm all good to go," Green was quoted as saying by Cricinfo. "Pretty surprised with how quickly it's actually healed and how functional I feel only a few weeks after."
Green is expected to return to the playing XI as Australia look to clinch the series after a crushing innings-and-31-run defeat in Gqeberha. The only question is who will make way for him.
Nic Maddinson has recorded scores of 0, 48, 0 and 8 across four innings on the tour. His place in the side was heavily debated when the squad was announced, and his modest returns have only intensified the scrutiny.
Marnus Labuschagne, who was also under significant pressure heading into the series, has done little to cement his place. After scoring 37 in each innings of the first Test, Labuschagne managed 14 in the first innings at Gqeberha before throwing away his wicket on 39 in the second, attempting to hit Simon Harmer into the stands.
Fast-bowling allrounder Beau Webster, who made 39 not out in the second innings of the first Test, also struggled to make an impact in Gqeberha. He failed to get going with the bat in either innings and did not produce noteworthy returns with the ball. Therefore, it seems Australia are almost certain to make room for Green in the XI.
"I think I've had a lot of experience up and down the order," Green added. "I think I'm well suited to batting at four and five, but obviously we've had some pretty incredible cricketers bat in those positions. So I'm very happy to move up and down the order depending on what the team wants."
