Chennai Super Kings have completed a major overhaul of their coaching setup, appointing Albie Morkel, Mohit Sharma and Gareth Batty as assistant coaches ahead of IPL 2027. The trio will join newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan as part of CSK's revamped support staff for the upcoming season.
CSK parted ways with batting coach Michael Hussey, bowling coach Eric Simons, strength and conditioning coach Greg King, and physiotherapist Tommy Simsek on Monday (October 26) as part of the restructuring exercise.
Among the previous support staff, assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram and fielding coach James Foster are the only members to retain their positions under the new regime.
Morkel, who played for South Africa as a bowling allrounder, was a part of CSK's core during their initial days in the Indian Premier League. He represented the franchise from 2008 to 2013, accumulating 827 runs and claiming 76 wickets. He also played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Rising Pune Supergiants.
Morkel has been a part of Joburg Super Kings' (JSK) coaching setup since the inception of SA20 and was recently appointed as the head coach, following the departure of Stephen Fleming.
Meanwhile, Mohit played four seasons for Chennai Super Kings between 2013 and 2019. He snared 58 scalps in 48 matches and also represented the side in the Champions League T20. He also played for Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the cash-rich league. He was the second-leading wicket-taker for Titans in IPL 2023. Mohit called time on his playing career in December 2025. He has also transitioned into broadcasting.
CSK haven't been involved in any player trade this season. They had a forgettable IPL 2026, finishing third from the bottom. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side could only win six of their 14 games and managed just 12 points.
