Star India batter Virat Kohli had a forgettable return to international cricket after almost six months as he was dismissed for 5 (6) in the first ODI against England on Tuesday, July 14 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Kohli arrived at the crease after Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 11 (21), caught at mid-off while trying to go big against Sam Curran, leaving India on 43/1 after 7.3 overs.
Upon his arrival, Kohli played a couple of dot balls against Curran before getting off the mark on his third delivery. In the next over, he faced a menacing Jofra Archer, who bowled short to him on the second ball of the over as Kohli pulled it away towards fine leg to collect his first boundary.
However, he was outfoxed on the following delivery as Archer pitched it up, and Kohli ended up missing the flick, as the ball crashed into his pads, and he was adjudged lbw. Since he was dead in front of the wicket, India captain Shubman Gill, who was at the non-striker’s end, advised not to go for the DRS, and three reds on ball-tracking vindicated on-field umpire Mike Burns’ call.
As a result, Kohli's return in India colours didn't go as expected, leaving his large fanbase disappointed.

England skittled for 258 in 1st innings
Former England captain Nasser Hussain explained how Archer surprised Virat Kohli with a fuller-length delivery, who was expecting another short ball from the speedster, given his line of attack against Indian batters on the current tour.
Earlier in the day, India skittled England for just 258 runs in 47.5 overs as Axar Patel (4/62), registered his career-best bowling figures. Apart from him, Gurnoor Brar (2/61) and Prasidh Krishna (2/50) also scalped two wickets each, while Jasprit Bumrah (1/31, 9 overs) contributed with one scalp. For England, Joe Root (76* off 76) and Liam Dawson (68 off 83), scored half-centuries.
