England delivered a commanding performance in match 22 of the Women’s T20 World Cup, defeating West Indies by 38 runs at Lord’s on June 24 to secure their place in the semifinals.

Wyatt-Hodge sets the tone

Opening batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge was the architect of England’s victory. After being put in to bat by Windies skipper Hayley Matthews, Wyatt-Hodge played with fluency and intent, scoring 65 off 42 balls at a strike rate of 154.76, including eight boundaries. Despite losing Amy Jones and Sophia Dunkley early, she stitched a crucial 66-run stand with Alice Capsey (28 off 23) to steady the innings.

Knight’s crucial knock

Former captain Heather Knight rose to the occasion, smashing 43 off 26 balls with seven fours at a strike rate of 165.38. A sharp run out from Shemaine Campbelle denied her a half-century, but Knight’s innings proved vital in pushing England to a formidable 186/7.

For West Indies, Ashmini Munisar was the most successful bowler with two wickets, though she conceded runs at 10.50 per over.

Controversial dismissal of Matthews

West Indies’ chase faltered early when captain Hayley Matthews was controversially given out in the fourth over. Attempting a cut off Linsey Smith, Matthews was adjudged caught behind by the third umpire after a review showed a spike on Ultra Edge despite a visible gap between bat and ball. Nimali Perera overturned the on-field call, leaving Matthews furious as she argued with the umpire before walking off.

Windies collapse

The dismissal rattled West Indies. Deandra Dottin tried to counterattack with 19 off 11 balls, but fell to stand-in captain Charlie Dean. From there, the chase unravelled.

Jahzara Claxton endured a torrid time, crawling to 21 off 34 balls at a strike rate of 61.76. Her slow innings stalled momentum and pushed the asking rate beyond 20.

Henry’s lone fight

Despite Claxton’s struggles, Chinelle Henry fought valiantly, scoring an unbeaten 51 off 30 balls at a strike rate of 170.00. Her effort, however, came too late to undo the damage, as West Indies finished on 148/5, well short of the target.

England’s discipline with ball in hand

Charlie Dean was England’s standout bowler, taking 2/31 in four overs at an economy of 7.75. Lauren Bell, Smith, and Sophie Ecclestone chipped in with a wicket each, ensuring England maintained control throughout the innings.

Player of the Match

Danni Wyatt-Hodge

Danni Wyatt-Hodge set the tone for her side right from the get-go. The right-handed opener kept dealing in boundaries as wickets continued to tumble around her in the beginning. Her enterprising knock set the foundation of a match-winning total.

Turning Point

Heather Knight's knock turned the game in England's corner as her runs came at an impressive strike rate of 165.38. Windies needed her wicket early to restrict the hosts to a chaseable total, but couldn't. Hayley Matthews' dismissal was also a big turning point in the game. The Windies captain is capable of winning games with the bat singlehandedly, and something similar was required of her, but she fell prey to a controversial call.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Charlie Dean (England women)

"To get over that line feels great. Different people scoring runs, Heather and Danni the standouts... You know, I'm never satisfied, still think I could've put in better performance. Happy with the processes I went in with today. You know, obviously a few catches went down, they all looked like tough opportunities to be honest. I don't think fielding's a huge issue... Hopefully we can cling onto those. [Nat Sciver-Brunt] back in the nets, but don't know much more about her than she does."

Losing Captain, Hayley Matthews (West Indies women)

"Certainly was hot out there, but not a bad decision for us to bowl. We missed our lengths at some intervals. We were all excited to get to play at Lord's, some people get this chance once in a lifetime. Not everything goes your way when you get those occasions. I'd certainly felt that I definitely did not hit it... At the end of the day, the umpire's decision got to be final. Clear gap between bat and ball. But got to respect umpire's decision. Taylor went off the field with respiratory illness... Hopefully she gets better."
