England pacer John Turner announces shock retirement at 25

Young England fast bowler John Turner has announced his shock retirement from the game at the age of 25. Turner had two years left in his Hampshire contract and also had an ECB development contract until late last year. He played two ODIs and two T20Is in his career, all against West Indies in October and November, 2024.

Turner scalped three wickets in his short international career and also boasted an impressive record across domestic formats. The speedster was out of action since last June due to a back stress fracture, and eventually decided to call time on his professional career due to his troublesome injury record.

The 25-year-old is an economics and finance graduate from the University of Exeter, and said this was the right time to pursue his next challenge in life.

"It was always my dream to play professional and international cricket, and doing so for Hampshire and England has been nothing short of living out those same childhood dreams," Turner said in a statement.

"I have, however, decided to retire from the game, and as you can imagine, this has been one of the hardest decisions I've had to make. The stress fracture, which has sidelined me for over a year, as well as my injury record, naturally made me think of my future both as a cricketer and away from the game, and subsequently, I decided now was the right time to pursue my next challenge,” he added.

John Turner's career in Hampshire

Turner studied at Hilton College, one of South Africa's most prestigious schools, before moving to the United Kingdom for university through his British passport, courtesy of his English mother. After impressing during a successful trial, he signed with Hampshire in 2021 and earned his maiden England call-up in 2023 following standout performances in The Hundred.

Despite his promise, Turner found limited opportunities in Hampshire's County Championship side, making just seven first-class appearances for the club. He also featured in three matches on loan at Lancashire in the early part of the 2025 season before an injury again pushed him to the sidelines.
