Haris Rauf has been fined and handed a demerit point for his involvement in a verbal spat with England spin-bowling allrounder Will Jacks during Pakistan's dramatic win in Lahore on Sunday. The incident occurred in the 46th over of Pakistan's run chase, with Rauf and Shadab Khan at the crease.
Rauf appeared agitated after umpire Sharfuddoula declined to call Sam Curran's short ball a wide. He then pointed his bat towards Jacks, who was fielding at mid-on, and walked towards him angrily. Sharfuddoula stepped in to defuse the situation, while Joe Root also intervened, engaging in a lengthy discussion with both Rauf and Shadab at the end of the over.
Rauf had the last laugh, smashing the first ball of the 48th over from Henry Crocombe straight down the ground for a boundary to seal a thrilling victory for Pakistan.
Jacks and Rauf also exchanged words after the match while players from both sides were engaged in the customary post-game handshakes.
In a press release issued on October 28, the International Cricket Council (ICC) found Rauf in breach of Article 2.20 of its Code of Conduct, which relates to "displaying conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game."
The Pakistan pacer accepted the sanction imposed by the match officials, which consisted of a 20 per cent fine and one demerit point added to his disciplinary record. England were also fined 15 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate, having fallen three overs short of the target. England captain Harry Brook accepted the proposed sanction.
Interestingly, Rauf has now accumulated five demerit points over the past 14 months. He previously served a two-match suspension after being found guilty of two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct during the 2025 Men's Asia Cup.
Should he accrue three more demerit points by September 13 next year, which would still be within 24 months of his first offence, he will incur a four-match suspension.
