ICC shifts Women’s Champions Trophy to India, tournament to be played in February 2027

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced India as the new hosts for the maiden edition of the ICC Women's Champions Trophy 2027. The tournament was earlier scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka. However, the ICC made a change in the host nation, as Sri Lanka continues to make the requisite reforms outlined at the ICC’s Annual Conference in July.
The tournament will now be held in India from February 14 to 28, 2027. The six-team event will be played across two venues: the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium in Vadodara.
The ICC evaluated three potential replacement hosts, Bangladesh, India and South Africa, against its established host selection criteria before recommending India. The recommendation was subsequently approved by the ICC Board on September 1.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed excitement ahead of the inaugural edition of the tournament, highlighting how the tournament will prove to be a great incentive for teams to continue rising in the rankings.
“The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket. As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition, while creating even greater incentive for teams to continue rising through the rankings and competing for a place on the global stage,” said Shah in a media release.
Teams to face each other in round-robin format
Shah also mentioned how the tournament will further add to the growth of the women’s game.
“With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world,” he added.
Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka will be competing against each other to be crowned the inaugural winners of the tournament. The tournament will be played in the T20I format with the six teams first competing in a round-robin league, and the top two teams will qualify for the final on 28 February.
