India rout Thailand despite lackluster batting display in Women's Asia Cup 2026 campaign opener

India got the better of Thailand in their Women’s Asia Cup campaign opener despite a middle‑order collapse, winning by 94 runs on Sunday, August 30, to begin their pursuit of the eighth title in style. This was only the fourth T20I meeting between the two sides, and India now lead their head‑to‑head record 4‑0.

Thailand were missing their designated skipper Naruemol Chaiwai due to injury. Therefore, Thipatcha Putthawong stepped up in her absence. Putthawong won the toss and chose to field first, a decision that came back to haunt the side.

The opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma got India off to a flyer. Seamer Phannita Maya struggled to get her line and length right and was made to pay instantly as Mandhana struck three boundaries to set the tone of the innings. Debutant Pratika Rawal, who came into the squad as Jemimah Rodrigues’ injury replacement, got off to a decent start before she was castled by Suleeporn Laomi with a delivery that kept a tad low.

Laomi brought her side back into the contest as she got rid of Shafali (64 off 36) before the latter could inflict any further damage. India suffered a dramatic collapse as they went from 108/2 to 137/9 in the space of just 37 deliveries.

The rescue came from an unlikely source as N. Sree Charani and Kranti Gaud hung on till the end and added 22 runs for the final wicket to take India to a defendable total of 159. Laomi returned figures of 3/26.

While Thailand scripted a remarkable comeback to keep the Harmanpreet Kaur‑led side to a par score, their batting couldn’t really sustain the unrelenting attack from the India bowlers.

Thailand lost their most experienced batter, Natthakan Chantham, in the very first over as Kranti Gaud struck immediately. They lost two more wickets to finish at 39 for the loss of three wickets at the end of the powerplay.
