The Indian Premier League (IPL) is touted as the fiercest competitive league in the cricketing world. With the best talent from around the globe featuring in the T20 extravaganza, teams have to bring their A game to the fore to topple their opponents and get closer to winning a title.
While winning an IPL title is a result of several factors going right, it’s the job of the head coach to ensure that the team environment, strategies and combinations are all on point to allow players to perform to the best of their abilities.

Over the years, the IPL has witnessed several head coaches, leaving an indelible mark on their team and guiding them to several title victories during their tenure. Here’s a ranking of the most successful coaches from the current era of IPL:
1. Stephen Fleming
The legendary New Zealand captain has been associated with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ever since IPL’s inception in 2008. After featuring in the inaugural season as a player, Fleming took up the coaching job in 2009 and hasn’t looked back. He guided CSK to the joint-most five IPL titles.
Under his coaching, the franchise has also played a record ten finals and qualified for the playoffs as many times. Fleming has etched his name as the most successful coach in IPL history, having guided CSK to 148 victories out of 267 matches, with a win percentage of 55.43%.
2. Mahela Jayawardene
Jayawardene joined the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) coaching staff ahead of the 2017 edition of the IPL and guided the team to their third title in his very first year. The Sri Lankan legend forged a brilliant partnership with captain Rohit Sharma as the duo took MI to unprecedented heights. With him at the helm, Mumbai became the most formidable side in IPL history, winning three titles within the first four years of his tenure.
Under his coaching, Jayawardene guided MI to 60 victories out of 107 matches, with a win percentage of 56.07%.
3. Ashish Nehra
The former India bowler is credited with being one of the major reasons behind the Gujarat Titans' success in their short history of the IPL. Nehra guided Gujarat to their maiden title victory in their debut season in 2022, and the team reached the finals of the following season as well in 2023. At Gujarat, Nehra has worked extensively with their bowling unit and is known for backing the players to the hilt. He has guided Gujarat to 37 wins out of 60 matches at a win percentage of 61.66%.
4. Andy Flower
The Zimbabwe legend first served as the head coach for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022 and 2023, guiding them to the playoffs in both seasons. Flower continued his Midas touch at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and guided them to the playoffs in 2024 before ending their 18-year-long title drought, steering them to their maiden IPL triumph in 2025.
As a result, Flower added another feather in his cap, continuing his phenomenal record as head coach. Flower has led his teams to 35 wins out of 60 matches, having a win percentage of 58.33%.
5. Ricky Ponting
The legendary Australia captain joined the Mumbai Indians' (MI) coaching staff in 2015 and guided them to their second triumph in the first season itself. After a successful tenure at MI, Ponting joined Delhi Capitals in 2018 and completely changed their fortunes, guiding them to three successive playoffs from 2019-2021, including their maiden final appearance in 2020. He later joined the Punjab Kings ahead of the 2025 season and again guided them to their second final ever, where they came short against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
In his coaching tenure, Ponting has guided his teams to five playoffs out of ten seasons. In 152 matches of his coaching, teams have won 80 games, with a win percentage of 52.63%.
6. Kumar Sangakkara
The legendary Sri Lankan player became the head coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2021 and brought a rapid change in the team’s performance. With Sangakkara at the helm, Rajasthan reached just their second final in 2022 and also reached the playoffs in 2024. He has guided RR to 31 victories out of 61 matches with a win percentage of 50.81.
7. Hemang Badani
Badani made his coaching debut in 2025 at the Delhi Capitals (DC), and the franchise had a strong start to the season. Delhi won six out of their first eight matches and looked sure shot favourites to make it to the playoffs. However, their campaign went haywire in the middle of the season as they could only win one out of their last five matches and missed out on a playoff spot to the Mumbai Indians (MI). Badani has guided DC to 7 wins out of 14 matches, having a win percentage of 50%.
8. Justin Langer
The Australian legend joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the 2024 season, determined to make them a champion side. However, the team couldn’t perform as per expectations under his tenure, failing to make it to the playoffs in both seasons so far. Langer's tenure at LSG has been quite underwhelming as he guided his team to 13 wins out of 28 matches with a win percentage of 46.42%.
9. Daniel Vettori
The Kiwi legend first served as the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru from 2014 to 2018, guiding them to back-to-back playoffs in 2015 and 2016. He later joined Sunrisers Hyderabad as head coach ahead of the 2024 season, and the team revolutionised the overall batting in IPL with their belligerent approach, which saw them finish as runners-up of the season. However, SRH couldn’t replicate their success in 2025, finishing sixth on the points table.
Vettori has guided his teams to 46 wins out of 103 matches, having a win percentage of 44.66%.
Note – Abhishek Nayar will be the head coach for the first time in IPL history in the upcoming season for Kolkata Knight Riders. Hence doesn’t have any previous data as head coach to make it to the rankings.
