IRE vs AFG: Azmatullah Omarzai reprimanded for showing dissent at umpire's decision

Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai has been reprimanded after being found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second ODI against Ireland in Bready. Azmatullah breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.”
The incident took place during the 41st over of Afghanistan’s innings, as he remained at the crease for a prolonged period after being given out, expressing his displeasure at the decision.
One demerit point has also been added to Azmatullah’s disciplinary record, with this being his first offence in a 24-month period. He admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee Dean Cosker, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
On-field umpires Gareth Morrison and Roly Black, third umpire Johnny Kennedy and fourth umpire George Brolly levelled the charge.
Meanwhile, Omarzai made a contribution of 33 (24) in Afghanistan’s total of 299/8 in the rain-curtailed 47-over fixture. He also scalped two wickets, giving away 42 runs from his seven overs during the fixture. Afghanistan registered a comprehensive 92-run victory in the match as Rashid Khan’s (6/34, 7.4 overs) six-wicket haul skittled Ireland for 207 in 33.4 overs.

The Afghans further took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series with a three-wicket win in the second ODI on Monday, August 10. Courtesy of their win, they earned direct qualification for the ICC men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
Afghanistan have now joined South Africa, co-hosts Zimbabwe, India, Australia, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan in securing a place in the Super 12 stage of the revised 2027 ODI World Cup format.
