Less than 24 hours after their historic 2‑0 series triumph over India, Cricket Ireland has been rocked by a seismic change. Head coach Heinrich Malan has decided to step down from his role after more than four years at the helm of the senior national side.

Malan, 45, took charge in 2022 and guided Ireland through a transformative period. Under his guidance, the team qualified for three consecutive T20 World Cups (2022, 2024, and 2026) and celebrated their first three Test victories against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi and Zimbabwe in Belfast. His tenure also included landmark wins over Pakistan, West Indies, South Africa, and, most recently, India.

Although his contract runs until 2027, Malan believes the time is right to hand over the reins. He believes that the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan in August should serve as a crucial part of preparations for the 50‑over World Cup Qualifiers in early 2027, and that a new coach should lead that journey.

“It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, staff and the wider Irish cricket community," Malan said in a press release issued by Cricket Ireland. "My family and I have had a wonderful experience living here, and we will look back on our time involved in Irish cricket with great affection.

“On the field, we can look back with great pride on our historic T20 World Cup victory against England in Melbourne, our first‑ever Test victory against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, the first home Test win vs Zimbabwe in Belfast, the historic T20 series win at home vs India and beating Pakistan, West Indies, South Africa as well as direct qualifications for T20 WC’s through our consistent ability to challenge and beat the world’s top teams.

“Thank you to the players, coaches and staff for believing in our shared vision, it has been a very special journey.”

Malan succeeded Graham Ford in January 2022. A middle-order batter and medium pacer during his playing days, Malan went through the rigours of domestic cricket between 2005 and 2009 before transitioning into coaching.

He enjoyed a considerable amount of success as a coach in New Zealand's domestic circuit, guiding Central Stags to the Ford Trophy (50-over competition) in 2014-15 and 2015-16. Under his watch, Stags also won the Plunkett Shield (first-class competition) in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

He also led Stags to the Super Smash (T20 competition) title in 2018-19. He joined Auckland Aces after leaving Stags and turned them into Ford Trophy winners in 2019-20. He also served as a fielding and assistant coach of the Blackcaps before joining Ireland.
