Jonathan Trott's tenure as head coach of Afghanistan came to an end after the team's group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2026 on Thursday, February 19. Trott's stint lasted three and a half years after taking over the role in July 2022 from Lance Klusener. Incidentally, Graham Thorpe was appointed the coach after Klusener left the job but the former England player did not take charge due to illness.
In his last press conference as Afghanistan head coach, Trott shed light on a number of subjects. When asked about why the former England batter chose to quit, Trott revealed that it was not his call and added that he was not sure whether it was the right time to depart from the role or not.

"With continuing, it's not my decision. So that's all, I'll leave it at really. Maybe the time's right, maybe it's not. I don't know, but I wish everyone the best in the future," said Trott as reported by Cricbuzz.
Notably, Trott originally signed up with Afghanistan for 18 months, after which his contract was extended twice - first by 12 months in 2024, and then again till the end of 2025. When it comes what his memorable moments were with the team, the Englishman highlighted maiden wins against Pakistan and England, and the bilateral away series wins against some other teams including South Africa.
"Lots of great memories. I always feel very fortunate enough to have had a lot of memories as a player but also now as a coach as well. Beating Pakistan for the first time in a World Cup, beating England, bilateral series wins away from home against teams like Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, all these sorts of things. I have been very fortunate enough to have coached some really great players, some really good humans, a good bunch of guys," added Trott.
I am not going to let you put words in my mouth: Trott
Trott remained tight-lipped about his coaching future. When asked whether a role with England was on the cards, the former batter refused to answer it in any manner which would allow rumours to harbour. But, nevertheless, the 44-year-old did reveal that he would love to coach the England side someday.
"I am not going to let you put words in my mouth. But, I have really enjoyed this and I don't know what the future holds. Maybe have a couple of days off and see how it goes. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the World Cup goes.
"Gee, I wish we were still here and able to play in the next round. But yeah, I am very proud of where I played my cricket and always like to see the England side do well. I would be lying. I would love to one day hopefully have the opportunity to coach a team that you hold so dear to your heart," Trott concluded.
