The sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is all set to begin on July 10, with the final scheduled on August 5, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Wednesday, April 22. The much-awaited tournament will be played across four venues in the country for the first time, namely SSC, Colombo, RPICS, Colombo, PICS, Pallekele, and RDICS, Dambulla.

Notably, the event was originally scheduled to take place in November - December 2025. However, with the T20 World Cup also scheduled in the country in February-March 2026, SLC postponed the tournament to ensure that its venues were fully prepared for the ICC event.

With LPL traditionally being a five-team event, there were reports of the addition of a sixth team for the upcoming season. However, no such confirmation has been made by the SLC so far.

LPL 2026 to clash with other leagues

The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo is set to host the league for the first time. The ground was recently renovated to host five games during the T20 World Cup, including the curtain-raiser between Pakistan and Netherlands.

The online portal for foreign player registration for the upcoming season is set to open on May 4. The LPL 2026 will take place along with three other franchise tournaments - Major League Cricket, The Hundred and Global T20 Canada. Hence, attracting foreign talent could well be a challenge for the league.

Jaffna Kings will enter the tournament as defending champions, having won the last edition after beating Galle Marvels by nine wickets in the final.
