Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar has etched his name in the history books, becoming just the second Indian to score a quadruple century in a first-class innings. The 29-year-old scored an unbeaten 400* (517), laced with 46 fours and seven sixes against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy plate league fixture in Sovima.

Sutar also surpassed Prithvi Shaw's 379 to achieve the second-highest score in Ranji Trophy history. The right-handed batter resumed his innings on 180* on Day 2 of the match at Nagaland Cricket Stadium, Sovima, Dimapur.

He was unbeaten on 392 at tea and later completed his 400 in the 155th over. Sutar had a great chance to break the all-time record for the highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history, held by BB Nimbalkar's, who scored an unbeaten 443* for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49. However, Mizoram declared their first innings on 581/9.

He got involved in an unbroken 189-run stand for the tenth wicket with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak (14 off 76), the third highest for the last wicket in the Ranji Trophy. They fell 43 short of the all-time tenth-wicket record of 233 held by Ajay Sharma (259) and Maninder Singh (78) for Delhi against Mumbai during the 1991-92 season.

Sutar's impressive run in Mumbai T20 League

Earlier this year, Sutar played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic 50-over competition, after impressing in local tournaments. In June, he played a key role in MSC Maratha Royals' successful title defence in the Mumbai T20 League, registering back-to-back half-centuries. He ended the campaign with 212 runs from six innings at a strike rate of nearly 120.

Ahead of the 2026-27 season, Sutar secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mizoram in last week's season opener against Manipur. He scored 35 in the first innings before following it up with a crucial 99 in the second, helping Mizoram fight back after conceding a 68-run lead. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent a three-wicket defeat.
