Match Overview

New Zealand and Zimbabwe faced off in the first women’s T20I of the three-match series at Hamilton's Seddon Park on February 25. Zimbabwe skipper Nomvelo Sibanda won the toss and elected to field first.

The decision cost her team dearly as Amelia Kerr, in her maiden assignment as New Zealand's full-time skipper, played a captain's innings, knocking the wind out of Zimbabwe's hapless bowling attack. Kerr smacked her maiden century off merely 51 balls, which was the highlight of the match, to set up a mammoth 92-run win for the hosts.

Kerr added 43 for the opening wicket with Georgia Plimmer, who fell to pacer Nyasha Gwanzura in the final over of the powerplay for 32 off 20 with six fours. She was the only wicket Zimbabwe managed, as Kerr and No. 3 Isabelle Gaze added a massive 159-run stand for the second wicket in just 88 balls.

Gaze played the perfect foil to Kerr, who pierced gaps consistently to showcase her full range at Seddon Park. Zimbabwe used no less than eight bowlers, but none could halt her onslaught as she struck 19 fours in her superlative innings. Zimbabwe reprieved Kerr on 45 when Christabel Chatonzwa grassed a chance at covers off Tshumawere.

Gaze, meanwhile, notched up a half-century of her own, staying unbeaten on 66 off 50 with six fours as New Zealand posted a solid 202 for 1 in their innings.

In response, at no point did Zimbabwe even remotely threaten the opposition. They made the worst possible start, losing their openers for ducks as Kelis Ndhlovu was cleaned up by Bree Illing in the first over, while Jess Kerr sent back Gwanzura for a golden duck in the next.

Beloved Biza (unbeaten 49 off 55) and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano (20 off 19) showed some resistance in their 38-run stand for the third wicket. But Kerr, not content with her maiden century, took matters into her hands with the ball too, having Mugeri-Tiripano stumped.

Biza then found company in Josephine Nkomo as they added 50 runs for the fourth wicket but took 61 balls for it with no real intent of going for the chase. Amelia returned to send back Nkomo a 34-ball 25 as Zimbabwe were kept down to 110 for 4 in the end.
