Pakistan have been fined five per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate during the ODI Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The Men in Green beat Sri Lanka by three wickets as they chased down 326 in 48.3 overs to clinch the title.
However, they were found one over short during their bowling innings after time allowances were taken into consideration by Match Referee Jeff Crowe. As a result, they breached Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences.
Notably, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Wayne Knights, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz levelled the charge. Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi pleaded guilty to the slow over-rate offence and accepted the proposed sanction.
Meanwhile, the final was never short of action for the capacity crowd at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. After being put in to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a huge score of 325/8 in their allotted 50 overs, riding on a splendid century from Kamindu Mendis (131 off 128). He had the support of Avishka Fernando (38 off 49) at the crease as the duo added 87 runs for the first wicket to get Sri Lanka off to a terrific start.
Pakistan complete joint-highest chase in ODI finals
Later, Pavan Rathnayake (77 off 65) continued his rich form and stitched a massive 146-run partnership off 118 balls for the third wicket alongside Mendis. In reply, star Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman (127 off 99) led the charge for his team, scoring his 12th ODI hundred. He became just the second player from his country to score two centuries in ODI finals after Saeed Anwar.
Apart from him, Saad Baig (74 off 75) and Arafat Minhas (61 off 31) also made valuable contributions as Pakistan completed the joint-highest successful run chase in ODI finals.
