Playing India in their backyard is always a challenge: Shai Hope

West Indies captain Shai Hope has admitted that facing India in their home conditions is one of the toughest challenges in international cricket, but insisted his side is eager to embrace it as their multi-format tour begins with the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27.

"Playing India in their backyard is always a challenge, and it's one that we definitely need to embrace," Hope said ahead of the opening ODI. "When you come here, you expect the best of the best. It's a great indicator of where we are as a team. Playing any side in their home conditions is always challenging, but it's something we look forward to.

"When you're playing international cricket, you want to test yourself against the best. When they're playing in their home conditions, that's the ultimate challenge. We're definitely looking forward to it, and it's going to be an exciting experience for us."

Hope emphasised that adaptability and acclimatisation will be crucial if the West Indies are to compete effectively and push India all the way during the series.

The right-handed batter boasts an impressive ODI record in India, having scored 512 runs in 11 matches at an average of 56.88, including two centuries and two half-centuries.

"I take great pride in trying to be the best player I can be," Hope said. "One of the most important aspects of that is adaptability, being able to adjust to different conditions and different opponents. It's not always going to work out because that's the nature of professional sport. Every day won't be your day. But I always try to focus on the finer details to give myself the best chance of scoring runs.

"In India, you have to play differently compared to Australia, England or even the Caribbean. It's about being meticulous in your training and preparation. That's something I always stress during team discussions, paying close attention to detail in how we prepare and analyse both the opposition and the conditions.

"It's important to be clear about how you want to score runs in any conditions you play in. Hopefully, some of the players who are touring India for the first time can get off to a good start in their international careers."

As the West Indies prepare for a stern test against one of the world's strongest teams, Hope believes the tour offers a valuable chance for his side to gauge its progress and gain crucial experience in tough conditions.
