SA vs AUS: Josh Inglis ruled out of last two ODIs, in doubt for Test series

Australia wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the last two ODIs against South Africa due to a fractured right index finger. He sustained the injury midway through the first innings after Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first during the first ODI in Durban.

Josh Inglis’ injury has also put him in doubt for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa beginning on October 9 in Durban, Kingsmead. Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that he has flown back home for scans, with his availability subject to further assessment. 

"The West Australian will return home for scans, with his availability for the three-match Test series subject to further assessment and progress," a CA statement said.

Inglis is part of the Test squad as a spare batter and reserve wicketkeeper. He has played five Tests in his career so far as a specialist batter, playing in all positions from No. 4 to No. 7. He got his career off to a terrific start, scoring a century on debut against Sri Lanka in early 2025 but has scored just 82 in his last six innings.

Meanwhile, Alex Carey will take up the wicketkeeping duties during the second ODI against South Africa on Sunday, September 27. If Inglis fails to recover in time for the Test series, Australia will also have to name a replacement wicketkeeper.
