South Africa have announced their 15-member squad for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 with the surprise inclusion of fiery pacer Shabnim Ismail. Ismail, who had hung up her international boots in May 2023, has reversed her retirement and will bolster South Africa's pace battery at the multi-nation tournament.

South Africa are likely to benefit massively from Ismail's return. Her ability to generate steam and clock consistently around the 120kph range can allow South Africa to put their opponents under the pump at seam-friendly venues in England.

The right-arm speedster will partner fast-bowling allrounder Marizanne Kapp, who has been shouldering the bulk of the responsibility of South Africa's seam attack since her retirement.

The Proteas have several highly experienced players in their line-up, like former captains Suné Luus and Dané van Niekerk, Chloe Tryon, and Ayabonga Khaka. They will be led by Laura Wolvaardt, who was in ominous touch in their recent 4-1 series win over India at home.

Wolvaardt, 27, aggregated 330 runs across five innings during the series against the Women in Blue at an astounding average of 82.50 and a strike rate of 168.36. Her outings included a hundred and three fifties. She also set a new world record for scoring the most runs in a bilateral series, going past Hayley Matthews' tally of 310.

Kayla Reyneke will be the player to watch out for. The 20-year-old is an enforcer down the order. She can strike at 157.42 and averages a jaw-dropping 53.00 in the shortest format of the game in seven innings.

South Africa are the runner-up from the previous edition. They have been placed in Group 1 alongside India, Bangladesh, Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan. They'll open their campaign on June 13 against Australia at Old Trafford in Manchester.
