Shakib Al Hasan's home vandalised in Bangladesh, attackers attempt to set it ablaze

Legendary Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan’s house was attacked in the country’s Magura district following his participation in a media interaction addressed virtually by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from Delhi.

Md Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Magura Sadar Police Station revealed that unidentified attackers tried to set fire to Shakib al Hasan's house around 9:00 pm in the Keshab Mor area of the town. Bricks and stones were also hurled at the house, shattering windows of the property.

“Several miscreants threw brick chips at the house and vandalised windows. They also tried to set the house on fire,” the OC told The Daily Star.

Several local reports have also claimed that petrol bombs were thrown at the residence as people reported hearing loud explosion-like sounds similar to firecrackers during the attack.

A video shared by Hasina's party, Awami League, captured firecracker-like sounds outside the 39-year-old cricketer's residence. Shakib previously served as an Awami League MP from the Magura-1 constituency.

Following the incident, security was tightened outside Shakib’s residence as the police continue to identify the attackers and the motive behind the assault.

Shakib last played for Bangladesh during the second Test against India in October 2024 in Kanpur. He had expressed his desire to play his last game in front of his home crowd in Bangladesh. However, he hasn’t returned to the country since the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government in 2024.

Following the political transition, several criminal cases have also been filed against Shakib, including a murder case in which he is among the accused. The former Bangladesh captain has been quite vocal about his return to the country and cooperating with the legal process, if provided personal safety and protection from harassment.

Since then, the veteran all-rounder has continued to ply his trade in franchise cricket all across the globe while living with his family in the United States. He has featured in leagues such as the Caribbean Premier League and the Lanka Premier League. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has previously stated that the door remains open for Shakib’s return to the national side.

He’s currently playing for Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League 2026 (LPL 2026), where he’s scalped nine wickets from eight innings and has also scored 32 runs from three outings.
