Nathan Lyon looked visibly frustrated after Australia's batting order fell like a house of cards on day 1 of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin.

Australia folded for just 198 in 53 overs and had only themselves to blame, as skipper Pat Cummins had won the toss and opted to bat on a surface with a decent amount of grass cover. Hasan Mahmud was the wrecker-in-chief for the tourists. He returned figures of 6/55, the third-best for any Bangladesh pacer in Tests.

Speaking to ABC after the end of the day's play, Lyon seemed upset with the batting effort and felt they needed to get way more than what they were eventually restricted to after choosing to bat first.

“I think if you win the toss and bat first, I think you want more than that (198),” said Lyon. “But it’s up to us bowlers now to put a really good performance in and challenge the Bangladesh guys as much as we can.

“I’m not going to sit here and judge our batters or comment on batting or s*** shots or anything like that,” Lyon said.

“All I can say is our preparation has been unbelievable for the last five weeks we’ve been up in Brissy on centre wickets, on challenging wickets, and I thought our batters looked were really good.

Channel 7 experts Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden were asked to dissect Lyon's remarks, and the former players said that the off-spinner's annoyance was palpable.

Ponting also suggested that Lyon might still be vexed for having been left out of Australia's playing XI in the day/night Test at the Gabba against England last summer.

“Remembering that he was left out of the side last summer, there’s a bit of that frustration still hanging over,” Ponting said on Channel 7. It just sounds to me that he’s frustrated with the output of the top-order batters and I think that’s what he’s trying to say.”

Cricketer-turned-broadcaster Hayden felt Lyon's anger was justified as Australia were below par with their batting.

“I reckon he’s livid and I think he’s got a really good point to be livid as well,” Hayden said.

“Because when you think about it in the context of where we are, this is the start of our summer, it’s winter, but it’s summer cricket season well and truly on the radar.

“The sum of all parts need to be there. It’s an important discussion. Bowlers need to feel like their batters are accountable.

“It’s a game of attrition, Test match cricket, and if you’re getting no time to recover and you’re not actually in a position from a batting unit, who have been ask to (bat first) by Pat Cummins, to then put someone like Nathan Lyon into the game in the back half in the second innings for Bangladesh, then I think we’re really kidding ourselves as a playing nation.”
